[personal profile] desireearmfeldt posting in [community profile] ds_noticeboard
Hello, DS/C6D fans past, present and future!  Welcome to the “Where’s The Online Action In Our Fandom These Days?” post.

The purpose of this post is to compile our collective knowledge about where DS/C6D fans can go to participate in our fandom these days, and to facilitate connections among old & newcomers to the scene.

This post is a WIP – it needs YOUR input!  [Last updated May 7, 2014]

Personally, I know very little about the geography of online fandom.  I’ve only been around a couple of years, and I stay in a very very narrow corner of the internet and rarely venture out.  So I have only a very slight notion of what’s out there.  Those of you who have been around longer and know the history, and those of you who have travelled more widely and visited places I’ve never heard of, please speak up!  I’ll be updating the master list on Sunday (maybe also as we go along; we’ll see what I have time for).

To get the ball rolling, here are a few things I know:

Currently Active Due South/Canadian 6 Degrees Online Communities

DS-noticeboard: You are here.  A place for announcing DS stories, sharing DS news, and making DS recs.  As far as I can tell, this is as much of a central clearinghouse for Due South fandom as there is at the moment -- at least, in the small corner of the internet I'm aware of!  On LJ and DW.

C6D-universe: This one's only slightly active, but it's the equivalent of DS-noticeboard, for C6D instead of Due South.  Challenges still get announced there, and sometimes fics, but not a lot else.  On LJ and DW.

DS-ficfinders: Forum for people to post asking "you know that story where Fraser gets shot in the hat and Ray gives him a rubber duck?  Can anyone tell me what it's called/where to find it?"  Also for people to ask for recs if they're looking for a particular sort of fic.  On LJ.  (I don't think there's a DW version.)

DS-snippets: Approximately-weekly prompts for 300-words-or-less fic in DS and C6D.  On LJ and DW.  It's also a tag, but not a collection, on Archive of Our Own (aka AO3): Community: ds_snippets | dsc6dsnippets.

AO3 promptmeme: A place where people can submit prompts for fanworks in Due South and C6D fandoms, and post works that fill existing prompts. Modelled on earlier kinkmemes, but general-purpose, not specifically about kink or porn.  On AO3.

[There are a couple of active-but-not-entirely-public comms I know of, which I don't have the personal authority to list here; if someone who knows what they're talking about posts comments about such things, I'll add 'em to the list.]

NEW!! [livejournal.com profile] c6d_fest_admin: A newly-created comm for admin posts for small challenges that don't have their own home (e.g. Ladies' Day or C6D Valentines).

Currently Active Recurring Challenges (& their associated communities)

C6D Valentine exchange: January-February. In which we send cards through the mail written from one character to another. No specific comm.; announcements usually go to C6D-universe.

DS/C6D Big Bang: April-October.  Combines Big Bang and reverse Big Bang, in that any type of fanwork is eligible.  Make a 20K fic or the equivalent in other media; then someone else makes a complementary work inspired by yours. Challenge comm on LJ. (No DW verison, I think.) Collections on AO3.

C6D Midsummer Santa: May-July?  A gift exchange for C6D fandoms (not including Due South).  No separate comm; annoucements usually go to C6D-universe.  Collections on AO3.

Due South Seekrit Santa: October-December?  A gift exchange for Due South.   ds_ssdiscussion is for for announcements and discussion concerning the dS Secret Santa. Collections on AO3 are by individual year, not collected under a parent collection like the Midsummer and Big Bang ones.  The 2013 one is http://archiveofourown.org/collections/dsss_2013/.  For earlier years, same URL with the year changed appropriately.  For years before the collections moved to AO3, the DSSS archive.

DS/C6D Ladies’ Day: A festival of fanworks featuring female characters from Due South and C6D fandoms.  No comm of its own; plans to run again next year.  Collection on AO3.

Canadian Blowjob Day: A festival of fanworks featuring Canadian characters participating in blowjobs, in honor of Callum Keith Rennie's birthday.  No comm of its own; probably running again next year.  No official collection, but here's a master post of works.

American Frottage Day: A festival of fanworks featuring American characters participating in frottage, in honor of David Marciano's birthday. No comm of its own, probably running again next year.  No official collection, but here's a master post of works.

Paul Gross Handcuff Day (coming April 30 2014!): A festival of fanworks featuring characters played by Paul Gross & handcuffs (I think?), in honor of Paul Gross's birthday.  No comm or collection of its own; master post forthcoming.  No word yet on whether it will run again.

And some challenges that have run recently and which I have no reason to believe will be repeated, but they could be if someone wanted:

DS/C6D AU challenge: A festival of Alternate Universe DS/C6D works.  Comm on DW (check out the brainstorming post for inspiration for future AU fics!).  Collection on AO3.

Due South Podfic exchange:  A gift exchange of DS podfics.  Collection on AO3.

Inactive But Still Useful Resources (rec comms & research comms)

[livejournal.com profile] ds_recsredux: "a themed reccing community which is still a great place to go for recs"

[livejournal.com profile] ds_profiles: "a comm that was used to write author profiles with recs (which were also put onto Fanlore)"

[livejournal.com profile] crack_van: A multifandom monthly recs community, which had a regular DS presence (tagged by fandom). And here's a lingk to the Pinboard archives of DS recs from crack-van.

[livejournal.com profile] dues_research: "A place for fic writers in DS fandom to swap and seek information" -- e.g. an essay on dogsledding or a blueprint of RayK's apartment. Looks like a good resource though not necessarily easily searchable.

Inactive or mostly inactive DS/C6D comms (that I know of):

Melancholydanes: Slings & Arrows comm.  On LJ.

[livejournal.com profile] ds_workshop:  Structured community for discussing and providing constructive criticism of Due South fanfiction. On LJ.

[livejournal.com profile] ds_writers:  Comm for DS/C6D fans to "find a beta, post a snippet, or simply gripe a little about writer's block." On LJ.

[livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction: Defunct comm that had regular flashfiction challenges & where a lot of semi-recent classics were written.

DS/C6D Kinkmeme: A kink-focused prompt meme.  On LJ and DW.  I believe the LJ version closed and moved to DW; the DW version seems to have gone officially extinct a couple of years ago.  But there's tons of great prompts over there...

[livejournal.com profile] ds_weekly: "[former] go-to place for finding anything DS related on LJ. It was the newsletter comm for the fandom.  It still has all the entries accessible - as far as I can tell - but I've no idea how many of the links will still work."

[livejournal.com profile] ds_shakespeare: Shakespeare-quote-based DS/C6D challenge comm.  The challenge ran twice(?); lots of works posted here.

[We don't need a comprehensive list of out-of-business comms!  But if you know of inactive comms out there that have a lot of useful history/resources/fic, especially ones it'd be nice to make sure don't get accidentally purged, let me know.]

Multifandom Comms with DS/C6D action and/or large presence of "us"

Fan-flashworks: Prompts every 10 days, all fandoms welcome.  Run by folks whose names will be familiar to readers of DS fic.  On LJ and DWCollection on AO3.

DS currently counts in Not For Primetime: a multifandom gift exchange for medium-sized fandoms. (Signups open as we speak.)  Admin comm on LJ and DW.  Comms for letters & discussion & whatnot on LJ and DW. Collections on AO3.  Apparently they're on Tumblr too?

Many C6D fandoms get representation in Yuletide: a multifandom gift exchange for very small fandoms.  On LJCollections on AO3.

Amplificathon is a great place to get your podfic cached & find other people's podfic cached.  On DW.  Associated with the audiofic archive at http://www.audiofic.jinjurly.com/.

fandomcalendar: annoucements of challenges & fandom events.  On DW.

[livejournal.com profile] older_not_dead: 4-times-yearly multifandom prompt fest, for stories about romantic and/or sexual relationships between over-40-year-old characters.  Seems to consistently get DS prompts (as well as non-fandom-specific prompts), and [livejournal.com profile] ride_4ever has been trying to drum up new participation over there.

Cons related to our interests & associated coms

Pacificon/Bitchinparty: I don't know, it's this thing people seem to go to? :)  Small multifandom con.  On LJ.

Muskratjamboree: Small con for slash writers. On LJ.

RCW139: Due South con.  Official website.

Comms that don't exist but maybe they should?

Some sort of organized craft-of-writing forum (maybe we should revive ds-workshop in some form?)

Other ideas....?

Hey guys, tell us technological old fogies how Tumblr works and where the action is.

...because Desiree knows basically nothing about that corner of the universe.

I'm told one should search for the "Due South" tag and/or follow particular individuals who are in the fandom.

Although Tumblr's more geared towards posting pictures than anything else, I have the impression there's also a fair amount of fandom chat, meta discussion, etc. going on over there.

Note: link-insertion took longer than even I predicted, so I got a bit lazy about hunting down DW versions of comms I know are in LJ.  Sorry, DW folks, for my LJ-centric view of the universe -- corrections & additions welcome!
